District 300’s Transportation Services Department and Durham School Services work in conjunction with school personnel, district administrators, and parents to provide a safe and efficient service to students. The safety and security of your child is our number one priority.
Our 220 buses and vans are dispatched from two facilities which are based in Algonquin and Carpentersville. Each school day we transport more than 16,000 students to over 50 different schools – including those outside of District 300 for out-placed students. Our drivers travel over 300,000 miles each month.
We are proud of the fact that we have retained many of the same drivers, dispatchers and routers over the years. This is a testament to the dedication that the transportation staff has to the students of District 300.

Who should I call if my bus is late?
- For routes numbered 100-199 or 1100-1199 please call the Carpentersville Bus facility at 847.426.1975.

Where can I find information about my student's bus route number, pick-up or drop-off time?
- All information about your student's transportation is available in Infinite Campus.
To whom do I report my address or telephone change?
- Please contact your student's school as soon as possible to inform them of the change. Please note, that it may take up to two weeks to change a pick-up or drop-off address in the system, especially during the first two weeks of school.
Can the driver stop at my house to pick up my student?
- Only certain students, whose needs are addressed through an IEP or 504 plan are eligible for "curbside" pick-up.
Will my student have the same bus driver every day?
- Your student may have a different driver for the morning and afternoon routes depending on illness, field trips, etc. Please be assured that every effort is made to keep driver changes to a minimum.
Bus Tracker App
The “Durham Bus Tracker” improves communication for parents and students who ride District school buses.
Our transportation partner, Durham School Services, has developed a phone app allowing parents to securely view the location of their child’s bus in relation to their assigned bus stop.
The Durham Bus Tracker app ensures that only parents and guardians of students assigned to specific bus routes are able to view the location of their student’s bus. The app requires parents and guardians to register and provide specific security information including the legal name and the ID number for each individual student. Once registered, the app will allow parents to view all of their students simultaneously from one device.
The app can be downloaded from the Apple App Store, Google Play, or directly at m.durhambustracker.com. A parent must have a smart phone or tablet device to download the app.
Use of the app is purely voluntary. There is no cost associated with the app, however associated data charges may apply and will be the responsibility of the user.
Once the app is downloaded, parents and guardians can follow these instructions:
- “Create An Account” by entering your name and email address, then create a password for this application
- “Add Student” by first selecting a “Location” which is “Illinois,” then “CSC” which is Carpentersville, IL
- Enter your “Student ID” number and “Student last name.” This must be entered exactly as it is in the District 300 student database
- If you have more than one student, continue adding students then select “Save”
- It is VERY important for students to still arrive at the bus stop 5 minutes prior to their scheduled time to avoid missing the bus. The bus will not return for students that were not at the bus stop at their correct time. Please note that GPS data gives us data such as speed of vehicle, idling time, accurate time of bus arrival to any location and door opening at each stop
- Late start and early release day schedules won’t be reflected in the app but you can see where the bus is located
Please note, there are currently a few drawbacks to the system and we are working with the developer to address these issues. For example, if a bus is removed from service for maintenance and a back-up bus is used for the route, your child’s bus will indicate a bus stationed in the bus lot. In other words, you will not be able to track the bus while it is out of service and the sub bus won’t always be in the system for you to track. Finally, as mentioned earlier, our late start and early release day schedules won’t be reflected in the app.
Bus Routes and Stops
Postcards with routing information will be mailed to homes one week before the start of school. Bus route information can be found in Parent Portal one week before the start of school.
All students should be at their assigned stop 5 minutes prior to scheduled pick-up. If the bus arrives within the 5-minute window, it will not wait for any students not present for pick-up.
Route numbers are displayed in the window of the bus. Route numbers are consistent; bus numbers are not. Children should identify their bus by the route number not the bus number. (Please do not confuse the bus number painted on the vehicles as the route number. Route numbers are only available on the cards displayed in the window).
Drivers will not return to stops or schools for children that have missed their bus. Transportation to and from school for children who have missed their bus becomes the parent/guardian’s responsibility.
The volume of phone calls received by our office around the start of school exceeds the number of calls received throughout the entire school year. We do our very best to answer your call during that time and appreciate your patience.
Either facility can assist you, directing your call to the appropriate facility is recommended.

Delayed Start/Early Release Days
Delayed Start Days
On bad weather days our first and foremost concern is for the safety of students and staff. In order to limit educational interruptions and ensure safety, District 300 will completely close schools only on days when heavy precipitation is expected to continue throughout the school day, or when there is an extreme emergency that has the potential to endanger students and staff.
Rather than completely closing schools, if conditions warrant, the district may institute a “delayed start” day. This means that the school day begins 2-hours later than normal and bussed students will be picked up at their bus stop 2-hours later than the regularly scheduled time. There will be no half-day programs on delayed start days and no preschool. Families will be contacted via the rapid communication system (RCS) informing them of the delayed start. The announcement will also be posted on our website.
Early Release Days
Early release days are scheduled throughout the school year. Preschool programs dismiss at their normal time.
- Elementary dismisses at 11:45 a.m.
- Middle School dismisses at 1:25 p.m.
- High School dismisses at 12:35 p.m.
Students eligible for transportation include:
- Students residing more than 1½ miles from their school
- Students having special needs with Individualized Education Plan (IEP) requirements
- Students who live in an area deemed hazardous by the Illinois Department of Transportation
Students NOT eligible for transportation include:
- Students residing in the area up to 1½ miles from the school and who do not meet the exception criteria

What to do if your child doesn’t return home
Transportation depots are staffed from 5:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. Monday thru Friday. After hours, contact the answering service at 414-985-9218.They will contact transportation administrators.

- Routes beginning with the number 1 are dispatched out of behind Carpentersville Middle School/Oak Ridge School, Carpentersville. Call 847-426-1975
- Call the appropriate transportation depot and report your child missing, dispatch will radio your driver for information
- Contact your child’s school to be sure the child got on the bus and didn’t go home with someone else, or stayed for an after school program
- Contact your child’s friends

New Students/Address Changes
Address information is maintained by your child’s school. Please let your school’s secretary know if your address will change at least two weeks prior to moving.

School Bus Rules
Riding the bus is an extension of the school day. Classroom behavior is expected on the bus. Drivers and/or administrators will assign seats. The following rules are to ensure everyone’s safety and will be strictly enforced. Violation of these rules may result in the loss of bus riding privileges. Refer to the Student Handbook for discipline procedures.
- Observe classroom conduct
- Be courteous; no profanity or inappropriate language
- Keep the bus clean
- Cooperate with the driver
- Do not smoke
- Do not damage the bus or equipment
- Stay in your seat
- Keep your head, hands and feet inside the bus
- Do not eat/drink on the bus
Other Safety Issues
- Stand at least 10 feet away from the side of the road or from where the bus is stopping.
- If students must cross the roadway, they should wait until the bus driver has stopped all traffic and the driver has given the hand signal to cross. Walk in front of the bus; never walk behind the bus.
- Be sure that the driver can see you and that you can see the driver.
- Parents/guardians are responsible for student safety to and from the bus stop and while students are waiting for the bus to arrive.
- Have a plan for what your child should do if they were to miss their bus or could not get in their house.
- A responsible person, 12 years or older, must meet a preschool child at the bus at the designated time. Preschool students not met at the stop will be returned to the school.
- A kindergarten child will be dropped at the bus stop without the greeter requirement.
- Students may only ride the bus they are assigned to and will only be allowed to get on and off at the assigned stop.
- Under no circumstances will children be allowed to ride home on a bus with another student. Emergencies are parental/guardian responsibility and will not be assumed by the transportation department.
- For the safety of your student we strongly discourage multiple route/stop requests.
Bus Only Zone at the School
Many schools have a separate area reserved for bus loading and unloading. Other drivers are reminded to use designated pick-up and drop-off areas only.
Special equipment is provided by District 300 for students if required by the IEP (Individualized Education Plan). Children requiring special equipment will not be allowed to ride without the proper equipment. Equipment such as safety vests remain with the student. Parents are responsible for the loss of such equipment. Buses do not carry extra equipment.
Students Not Riding the Bus (Non-Riders)
Your child’s stop will be removed from the route after three consecutive days of your child not riding. Absences exceeding three consecutive days should be reported to dispatch at the appropriate transportation facility (Algonquin or Carpentersville).
Audio/Video cameras are utilized on buses to monitor behavior. Video will be viewed by building administrations upon request. Video cannot be viewed by parents or the general public to protect the confidentiality and privacy of other students.
Weather Conditions/Late Buses
Please do not call transportation to find out whether District 300 schools are closed due to weather. Instead, please check the home page of the District 300 website, www.d300.org to see if there is an announcement.
On bad weather days our drivers first and foremost concern is the safety of our students. Your patience is appreciated.
Severe weather conditions impact travel times. It is generally impossible to predict the exact time for which a bus will be delayed. For instance, when you are caught in traffic, you hope the delay will be only minutes but that may not always be the case. The actual time of the delay is not known until it’s over.
