AVID

  • AVID In A Nutshell:

    • AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination and the AVID class takes the place of the exploratory rotation in middle school. It’s goal is to take average to above average students to the level of excellence.
    • AVID increases the opportunity for students to enroll and succeed in accelerated middle school courses (Math and ELA), advanced high school classes and in college.
    • AVID provides strategies to help raise test performance in classes and for the PSAE/ACT/SAT.
    • AVID helps students with organizational and note-taking skills including the use of a binder system and Cornell/Focused notes.
    • The AVID class schedule consists of two days of tutoring sessions in specific content areas – these are conducted by trained tutors; activities led by the AVID teachers; strategy work from the AVID curriculum to be used in all classes; and career and college readiness activities.
    • AVID creates a “team within a team” feel where individual student’s success is monitored and supported more closely by the AVID teacher.

    What AVID isn't:

    • AVID isn't a remedial program.
    • AVID isn't an organizational fix. 
    • AVID isn't a free ride.
    • AVID isn't a niche program.
    • AVID isn't a college outreach program.

    The AVID Student Profile:

    • “Academic Middle” Students
    • Students with Academic Potential
      • Approaching or meeting standards (2’s and 3’s on report card)
      • 2.5-3.5 GPA middle school
    • Meets standards or approaching standards on standardized tests
      • One grade below or on level for i-Ready
    • Potential to excel in rigorous courses with support (Accelerated Math and ELA)
    • INDIVIDUAL motivation, desire, and determination with increased support
    • Average or better behavior and attendance record
    • College potential with support

    AVID Strategies:

    The AVID curriculum, based on rigorous standards, was developed by middle and senior high school teachers in collaboration with college professors. It is driven by the WICOR method, which stands for writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading. AVID curriculum is used in AVID elective classes, in content-area classes in AVID schools, and even in schools where the AVID elective is not offered.
