English Learners

  • A sheltered instruction approach is used to teach both language and content simultaneously. Students are in a sheltered English Language Arts class with an ESL teacher.

  • ESL I Language and Literacy Entering (ESL1860/ESL1861)

    Length/Credit: 2 semesters/2 units: 1 unit for English and 1 unit for strand 2 (this course is scheduled as a double period for a full year)

    Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12 

    Prerequisite: Limited English Proficient identified and placed based on WIDA ACCESS test results (1.0-2.0), Lexile Level (BR-550), 0-1.5 active years in EL programing and ESL teacher recommendation.

    Description: This course is intended for students new to the U.S. Students will use beginning English language skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing for everyday and academic purposes. Students will have opportunities to work with reading strategies in a variety of adapted text as well as learn to write for various purposes. Instruction is scaffolded and differentiated based on WIDA English Language Proficiency levels. 

  • ESL II Language and Literacy Emerging (ESL1864/ESL1865)

    Length/Credit: 2 semesters/2 units: 1 unit for English and 1 unit for strand 2 (this course is scheduled as a double period for a full year) 

    Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12 

    Prerequisite: Limited English Proficient identified and placed based on WIDA ACCESS test results, (2.1-3.0), Lexile Level (520-805), 1-2 active years in EL programing and ESL teacher recommendation.

    Description: This course expands on the English communication skills gained in ESL I. Students will continue to access grade level English content through scaffolded and differentiated instruction based on English Language Proficiency levels. Adapted text continues to be utilized. 

  • ESL III Language and Literacy Developing (ESA1870/ESA1871)

    Length/Credit: 2 semesters/1 unit

    Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12

    Description: The course is designed to assist students whose first language is not English to acquire proficiency in the English language. This course expands on the English communication skills gained in ESL II. Students receive developmentally appropriate  instruction in the areas of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students will continue to access grade level English content through scaffolded and differentiated instruction based on English Language Proficiency levels.

  • ESL IV Language and Literacy Expand/Bridge I (ESA1874/ ESA1875)

    Length/Credit: 2 semesters/1 unit

    Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12

    Description: The course is designed to assist students whose first language is not English to acquire proficiency in the English language.  This course expands on the English communication skills gained in ESL III. Students will continue to access grade level  English content through scaffolded and differentiated instruction based on English Language Proficiency levels. Students in this course should be at proficiency levels 3.5+ in WIDA.
