Physical Education

  • High school physical education instruction enhances individual well-being concepts that can be applied to a lifetime of wellness. As students progress through high school they will have a choice of activities that include, but are not limited to, group fitness, dance, yoga, weight training, strength, conditioning, and individual and team sports. Concepts include, but are not limited to, goal setting, exercise physiology, and fitness principles.

  • Athletic Strength and Conditioning (PE9810/PE9811)

    Length/Credit: 1 semesters/0.5 unit 

    Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12

    Prerequisite: Intro to Athletic Strength and Conditioning OR with Athletic Director approval.

    Description: Athletic strength and conditioning physical education course is designed to increase athletic performance. This course will emphasize a rigorous fitness/weight training program along with the development of goal setting and leadership skills. A daily vigorous workout is both required and expected based on each individual student’s workout program. These workouts involve strength, cardiovascular endurance and flexibility to develop and increase functional athletic performance.

  • Empower P.E. (PE9817)

    Length/Credit: 1 semester/0.5 units 

    Grade: 10, 11, 12

    Prerequisite: Wellness Fundamentals I and/or Wellness Fundamentals II OR Intro to Athletic Strength and Conditioning OR Flex PE 1.

    Other Info: All students are eligible to take this ONE semester course, one time. 

    Social worker or 504 team can recommend to repeat course based on student need.

    Description: This course targets anxiety and stress relief techniques to help our youth take control and feel better about themselves and how activity can change their mood and outlook. This will help self improvement, problem solving, and physical wellness. 

    Students will be able to identify a variety of anxiety and stress relief techniques and determine what has worked best for them after putting each to practice. The other purpose is to help students find joy in activities they want to try and will continue to put into practice outside of school to have a happy life.

  • Flex P.E. 1-7 (PE9841-PE9847)

    Length/Credit: 1 semester/0.5 units 

    Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12

    Prerequisite: Must complete courses in sequential order. Must have a full academic course load.

    Other Info: This is a blended course Students are required to use their own smart device and purchase their own heart rate monitor. First time enrollment costs $200 which includes the heart rate monitor. Sequential courses after cost $150.

    Description: This course meets 1 day a week and then students are responsible to submit their workouts digitally. Students are required to achieve 60% of their max heart rate for every school day. Students are also required to complete cognitive lessons, discussions, projects and reflections online.

  • Group Fitness P.E. (PE9818/PE9819)

    Length/Credit: 1 semester/0.5 units 

    Grade: 10, 11, 12

    Prerequisite: Wellness Fundamentals I and/or Wellness Fundamentals II OR Intro to Athletic Strength and Conditioning OR Flex PE 1.

    Description: This course is designed to provide students with alternative activities for becoming physically fit and healthy. Students will be introduced to a variety of group fitness activities which include but not limited to yoga, Pilates, cardio kickboxing, step, strength activities, interval training and basic dance. Heart rate monitors are used to individualize the workout to each student's needs. Students complete project-based assessments and assignments that are utilized for students to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the fitness skills taught in the course. The goal of this course is for students to discover a form of exercise they can pursue outside of the school setting to attain and maintain lifelong fitness and wellness.

  • Intro to Athletic Strength and Conditioning (PE9808/PE9809)

    Other info: Available for ninth grade with Athletic Director approval.

    Grade: 11

    Prerequisite: Wellness Fundamentals I and/or Wellness Fundamentals II OR Intro to Athletic Strength and Conditioning OR Flex PE 1.

    Description: This course provides leadership opportunities in the physical education class setting. Students will actively participate in and learn how to lead small and large group activities as well as improve their communication, organization and problem solving skills.

  • P.E. Leadership Training II (PE9828/PE9829)

    Length/Credit: 1 semesters/0.5 unit 

    Grade: 12

    Prerequisite: P.E. Leadership Training I

    Description: This course allows students to utilize the leadership techniques they learned in PE leadership 1. The student will actively participate in and lead small and large group activities and assist physical education teachers in teaching, testing, officiating, and handling the managerial tasks associated with physical education instruction.

  • Sports and Fitness (PE9806/PE9807)

    Length/Credit: 1 semester/0.5 units

    Prerequisite: Wellness Fundamentals I and/or Wellness Fundamentals II OR Intro to Athletic Strength and Conditioning OR Flex PE 1.

    Description: Sport for fitness class curriculum will build on the fundamentals introduced in the freshman courses. Students will participate in team and individual sports and other fitness type of activities. Students will continue to work on their personal fitness goals by using competitive sports to achieve a healthy and active lifestyle. 

  • Wellness Fundamentals Semester I & Semester II (PE9800/PE9802)

    Length/Credit: 1 semester/0.5 units 

    Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12

    Description: Students will participate in team sports units to be selected by the teacher from the following list: basketball, floor hockey, lacrosse, miscellaneous games, softball, soccer, speedball, team handball, touch football, track and field, tumbling, ultimate Frisbee, and volleyball. The freshman Physical Education curriculum will emphasize the development of a personal fitness program and the skills learned through participation in team sports. A variety of individual and team activities are included in order to give students a well- rounded understanding of basic fitness principles, five components of fitness and team sport concepts.
