World Languages

  • Students may choose to study Spanish, French, or German (at Dundee-Crown and Jacobs). Students will develop the language skills in order to communicate in personal, professional, and social settings with others that speak the target language. While in class, students will almost exclusively utilize the target language as they are immersed in communicative activities and learning about the target cultures.

  • AP Spanish Language and Culture (WL5513/WL5514)

    Length/Credit: 2 semesters/1 unit

    Prerequisite: Spanish IV OR Spanish for Spanish Speakers II

    Description: AP Spanish Language is intended for students who wish to develop their proficiency in all four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students who enroll should already have knowledge of the language and culture of Spanish-speaking peoples and should have attained a reasonable proficiency in listening comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing. This class will expose students to a rigorous course and prepare them to take the AP Spanish Literature and Culture Test. 

  • AP Spanish Literature and Culture (WL5515/WL5516)

    Length/Credit: 2 semesters/1 unit 

    Grade: 10, 11, 12

    Prerequisite: AP Spanish Language
    and Culture

    Description: The class uses a thematic approach to teach students about the literature of Peninsular Spanish, Latin America, and the Hispanic communities of the United States. Students utilize critical reading, analytical writing, and speaking skills to examine literature and its context within time and place. This class will expose students to a rigorous course and prepare them to take the AP Spanish Literature and Culture Test.

  • ECC Intermediate Spanish I (ECCOSPN201)

    Length/Credit: 1 semester/0.5 units
    4 credit hours.

    Grade: 11, 12

    Prerequisite: Satisfaction of placement criteria: ECC Placement Tests (Writing=55, Reading=95) Other: Other: Grade of C or better in SPN 101 and 102; two years of H.S. Spanish with grade of C or better; or placement.

    Description: Includes grammar review from SPAN 101 and 102. Specifically focuses on more complex grammatical concepts, composition, vcabulary building and practice in conversation.  Supplementary intermediate level material may be read in class or as outside assignments. 

  • ECC Intermediate Spanish II (ECCOSPN202)

    Length/Credit: 1 semester/0.5 units
    4 credit hours.

    Grade: 11, 12

    Prerequisite: Satisfaction of placement criteria: ECC Placement Tests (Writing=55, Reading=95) Other: Grade of C or better in SPN 201; three years of H.S. Spanish with grade of C or better; OR placement.

    Description: Course begins with brief SPN 201 grammar review. Additional activities focus on studying and applying increasingly complex grammatical concepts and vocabulary. Supplementary intermediate level material may be read, listened to or watched in class or as outside assignments.

  • French I (WL5840/WL5841)

    Description: French I is designed to introduce students to the French language and cultures of French-speaking people. Students begin to develop reading, writing, listening and speaking skills in French.

  • French II (WL5843/WL5844)

    Length/Credit: 2 semesters/1 unit

    Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12

    Prerequisite: French I OR language proficiency at French level I as determined by divisional approval.

    Description: French II is designed to build on skills learned in French I. Students continue to increase their abilities to communicate and understand French. Class is primarily conducted in French.

  • French III (WL5846/WL5847)

    Length/Credit: 2 semesters/1 unit 

    Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12

    Prerequisite: French II OR language proficiency at French level II as determined by divisional approval.

    Description: French III is designed to engage students in increasingly advanced skill development through authentic materials. Students learn, think critically, and express themselves about a variety of topics in the French language. Class is conducted primarily in French.

  • French IV (WL5849/WL5850)

    Length/Credit: 2 semesters/1 unit 

    Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12

    Prerequisite: French III OR language proficiency at French Level Ill as determined by divisional approval.

    Description: French IV is designed to immerse students in the French language through literature, media, and continued study of language structures. Students will develop further proficiency in the French language.  Class is conducted primarily in French.

  • Spanish for Spanish Speakers I (WL5861/WL5862)

    Prerequisite: Diagnostic Placement and being a fluent Spanish speaker

    Description: Spanish for Spanish Speakers I is designed to enhance student’s knowledge of the Spanish language and the Hispanic cultures. Students will improve literacy skills with an emphasis on speaking, listening, reading and writing with the usage of authentic materials. Class discussion and assignments for this course will be entirely in Spanish. 

  • Spanish for Spanish Speakers II (WL5863/WL5864)

    Length/Credit: 2 semesters/1 unit 

    Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12

    Prerequisite: Spanish for Spanish Speakers I

    Description: This course is designed to further student’s knowledge of the Spanish language and prepare students to take AP Spanish Language and Culture. Students will work towards an emphasis on speaking, listening, reading, and writing with the usage of authentic materials. Class discussion and assignments for this course will be entirely in Spanish.

  • The Commendation toward the Seal of Biliteracy

    Description: The Commendation toward the Seal of Biliteracy will be granted both on the diploma and transcript to the students who take an AP Language Exam and score a 3 and show proficiency in English. As well as meet the minimum requirement on the SAT or proficiency on ACCESS in high school. 

  • The State Seal of Biliteracy

    Description: The State Seal of Biliteracy will be granted both on the diploma and transcript to students who take an AP Language exam or STAMP test and score a minimum of intermediate high and receive a score of 4 or 5 and show proficiency in English. As well as meet the minimum requirement on the SAT or proficiency on ACCESS in high school.
