Happy New Year!! 2012 is off to a fantastic start!!! This month we have been learning penguins, their unique characteristics and habitats.
Writing
We have continued to learn the traits of good writing. This month we are focusing on non-fiction writing. At the end of the month we will be learning about correct letter writing. Please reinforce good conventions at home. Students should be using capitals and punctuation correctly.
Science
The children have been working hard to locate, name, and spell the continents and oceans correctly. Our class voted to take the test next Thursday, January 20th. They will need to be able to locate and label the continents and oceans. Correct spelling counts!
In science, we will complete our penguin unit and will then be moving on to animals! We will be studying birds, mammals, reptiles, fish, and amphibians, and all of their distinctive qualities.
Math
We continue to work on several math skills including double-digit addition and subtraction with and without regrouping, as well as, money, time, and measurement. The children have been discovering different strategies to help them with these skills. Please continue to encourage your child to practice the basic math facts.
Book It
Remember to keep reading at home with your child, and to return the reading incentive calendars. This month students can earn pizzas, Great America and Kane County Cougar tickets!!!
Returning these reading calendars, as well as the completed daily math homework, counts toward a successful homework grade!
Winter Weather
Please remember to keep sending mittens and hats to school. The weather has been very unpredictable and we want to keep the children warm at recess.
