Screen time is becoming a major concern for children these days.   More and more, elmentary students are displaying behaviors that interfere with their ability to learn.  This often result from kids spending too much of their lives watching TV and playing video games.  I have experienced increased impulsitivity, shorter attention spans, and a difficulty to focus on important tasks like reading and writing.  While I don't claim that TV and video gaming are bad for children, the ability to sustain one's attention for longer and longer times are critical for educational growth.  I recommend parents to balance screen time with physical activities, family activities, and, of course, reading.

There is so much junk on the television, it's sometimes hard to find the good stuff.  If you have cable, i would recommend that any of the Discovery Channels be on your 'My Favorites" list.  Mythbusters is a popular show that models the scientific process around many interesting topics.  The Science Channel has a whole bunch of great shows.  I often record them to use in the classroom.  You should find incredibly engaging visuals that help even higher level content more accessible than before.  I have noticed that the award-winning show, Planet Earth is being shown again on one of the channels.

Another favorite channel is the National Geographic Channel.
