Basic Math Fact Drill
I will be administering a math drill test several times per trimester. In second grade, the children are expected to successfully compute addition and subtraction problems correctly in 2 minutes by the end of the year. I encourage your child to be practicing these basic math facts at home, so they can be more successful. Fun computer games, flash cards, and word problems are a great way to practice at home. We will also be learning skills and strategies at school to increase their basic math test score.
Word Study
Our spelling curriculum is based on the book, Words Their Way. The emphasis on this word study program is the word study for phonics, vocabulary and spelling instruction. We have systematically selected spelling words based on specific patterns which are ordered in a developmental format. Each week your child will bring home a list of 12 or more words to study. We expect your child to not just memorize how to spell the words, but to use them in everyday writing. On Friday, your child will only be tested on the spelling words from the list.
Through the course of the year some words may repeat and will increase in difficulty. Spelling abilities and skills are unique to each child. Throughout the week, please assist your child in studying these words as often as they require.
Homework
Homework consists of daily math practice sheets, daily reading, and daily word study. The daily math practice sheets will come home up to 5 days a week. These days will vary and it will be your child's responsibility to complete and return them to school the next day. Secondly, your child is expected to record their reading on the monthly reading calendars for the reading incentives. The August reading calendar is attached. A new calendar will come home at the start of each month. Also, your child is expected to sort and practice spelling a given set of words each week. Your child's homework grade will be based on the daily math practice sheets and monthly reading calendars. Both of these must be completed and turned in on time to achieve a meeting grade on the report card.
Water Bottles
Brain research proves water is an important tool of learning. The children are allowed to keep a water bottle on their desk in class. However, these water containers must be reasonable size and not become a distraction to the children.
Snack
Students are encouraged to bring a healthy and nutritious snack to be eaten mid morning. Please do not send any messy foods or snacks that require a spoon or straw. These healthy snacks will energize their brains for maximum learning!
Birthday Treats
Birthday treats are a fun and yummy way for the children to celebrate their birthday at school. Starting this year, all treats brought into the classroom must be store bought for the safety of the children. Birthday treats can be sent in with your child or dropped off in the office
