Algonquin Lakes English Language Learner Program
Reading for Mastery--Level 2
The Reading for Mastery Program has been effectively used with English Language Learners (ELL's). The program contains 145 lessons that focus on decoding skills, reading vocabulary and word meanings. Students will learn how to sound out difficult words and read well and quickly. They will learn how to remember information that is important and how to use that information to answer questions. Students will develop the ability to "read to learn" in order to understand subjects such as science and social studies. The following are some examples of the language/reading skills that the students will receive.
Decoding:
The student will read the following sounds:
ce, ou, ir, oa, ar, al, aw, oi, ee, ea(long), mb, ew and ea (short)
The students will also read words with the following endings:
s. ess, ed, ing, y, tion, sion, ly, and er.
Comprehension:
Answer literal questions about a textbook selection.
Answer questions about a textbook selection by recalling details and events.
Identify cause and effect.
Predict the outcome of a textbook story.
Put events from a story in the correct order.
Identify the author's purpose in a passage.
Describe, setting, and interpret the character's motives.
Vocabulary:
Learn facts about plants and animals
Comprehend word definitions Read proper nouns
Read "time words" correctly
Choose a word that means the same as underlined word
The students will be given reading fluency and comprehension tests throughout the program.
