Algonquin Lakes English Language Learner Program
Reading for Mastery--Level K
The Reading for Mastery Program has been effectively used with English Language Learners (ELL's). The language/reading lessons range from 1-150. The Alqonquin Lakes Kindergarten ELL students will be placed in the appropriate lesson to match their language and/or reading needs. The students will follow a teacher presentation book and complete the accompanying workbooks.
The ELL students will receive oral language skills necessary to understand what is spoken, written, and read in the classroom. The following are some examples of the language/reading skills that the students will receive:

Following directions
Pronouns-examples: I, you, we, your
Body Parts
Past, present and future tenses
Speaking in complete sentences
Describing pictures using: same, some, all, none, different
Prepositions-examples: in, on, over, in front of, next to
Days of the week
Months of he year
Opposites-examples: wet, dry, full, empty
Common objects such as school supplies, household items, foods and vehicles
Locations-example: dentist's office, grocery store, airport
Reading:
Letter/sound identification
Repeating sounds
Producing sounds
Letter formation
Reading rhyming words-example: am, Sam, ram, sad, mad
Three and four-letter words
Repeating story sequence
Story comprehension
Copying words
Short reading passages
The students will be given short mastery tests throughout the program.
