Allison comes from a family of teachers and is honored to be able to support the public education system.  She earned her first Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of North Texas, near Dallas.  Later, she worked as a substitute Spanish teacher in the Milwaukee area while she pursued her journalism degree.  She earned a second B.A., graduating summa cum laude from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.  She was a staff reporter at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel from 2002 to 2004 on the night police beat, which regularly took her into Milwaukee's most troubled areas to cover late-breaking news such as homicides, fires and accidents.  She went on to work full-time for the Northwest Herald, where she won the 2005 first place award for best in-depth reporting among daily papers from the Northern Illinois Newspaper Association.
