Trish Whitecotton, Principal This year we welcomed 612 students to Golfview School. I am very proud of the improvements that we have made in the last three years. The teachers and staff have worked very hard in changing the way that we teach reading, writing and math. The results of these changes are the consistently improving test scores and student achievement levels. The results from the 2005 state testing showed that Golfview students significantly exceeded the achievement targets set by the State of Illinois. We are beginning the third year of our school reform project and expect to see continued growth in learning in all subject areas. Each month I look forward to the Principal’s Book of the Month. Each month I read a selected book to every classroom in the building. The books are selected as models of literature and/or to reinforce positive character education traits. After I read the book to the class it stays in the classroom library for students to read and share with others. During the Reader’s Workshop or the Writer’s Workshop the classroom teacher uses the Book of the Month in instructional activities and students create a variety of written responses to the book. These books become very memorable for the students. The majority of students can retell the story of a Book of the Month from two years ago. Pictures of the covers from all of the books that have been read are hanging in the Book of the Month Gallery in hallway between the office and the multi-purpose room. Golfview is beginning the third year of a partnership with the Boys and Girls Club of Dundee Township. The club provides after school academic and recreational activities for 125-150 students. One of the most successful programs of the partnership is the soccer program. The soccer program began in the fall of 2004 with 12 teams and 120 students in grades 1-4 from Golfview. In the spring of 2005 the league stayed at 12 teams but included students and teams from Perry Elementary. This fall over 400 students from Golfview, Meadowdale, Parkview, Perry and Lakewood in grades K-6 will participate in the league. The students, staff and parents of Golfview make it a great school. We have faced and met a number of challenges while improving the achievement of our students. We will continue to improve and grow as we meet the needs of all our student learners and their families. It is an honor for me to be the principal of Golfview School. Respectfully, Trish Whitecotton Principal |
