Board approves new classrooms for Parkview and Golfview, Allows for expanded educational programmingCARPENTERSVILLE – The District 300 School Board voted last evening (June 23) in support of a proposal to build new 6-classroom additions both at Parkview and Golfview elementary schools.
The vote was 5-1 in favor of the Eastside Study Committee’s “Scenario 1” proposal (the least costly of the committee’s 3 proposals), with Board Member Anne Miller absent and Board Member John Ryan voting no. Ryan did not comment during the meeting on the reason(s) for his vote. Tomorrow (June 25), a full transcript of the Board’s discussion and vote will be posted online to the Eastside Study Committee webpage at www.d300.org.
The Board approved “Scenario 1”, which was the recommendation of the ESC principals and the Superintendent’s Office, at a projected cost of $5.3 million. The District plans to complete the construction in time for the 2009-2010 school year, when new attendance boundaries will go into effect for Algonquin Lakes, Golfview, Meadowdale, Parkview, and Perry elementary schools. The Board approved these new boundaries last evening (June 23), as detailed below.
The plan also calls for additional educational programming at the pre-K and kindergarten levels for east-side elementary schools. The District will determine in 2009 which particular east-side schools will host the extended-day kindergarten and preschool offerings. D300 educators and Board members alike noted the tremendous long-term benefit to enriching the early educational opportunities for D300 children. This academic focus was part of the Board’s comprehensive look this year at the recent bubble of crowding that east-side schools have faced, most notably at Golfview and Perry elementary schools.
In summary, the boundary changes are as follows:
D300 is mailing letters this week to all families with current school children in the four (4) affected boundary zones. All current D300 families who could have been affected under the various proposals were notified earlier this month about the proposals and their opportunities to give feedback to the School Board prior to the Board vote. Around 150 parents attended a series of 3 public hearings in June 2008. All public comments received by June 17 were posted to the ESC webpage.
The funding for the new wings at Golfview and Parkview comes through the building bonds approved by D300 voters in the March 2006 referendum to address growth and crowding in D300. The District remains committed to completing the building improvements for all schools across the District; as soon as the state Capital Development Board (CDB) makes the funding available, the remaining projects will move forward, and some may be able to start even sooner. The District has already completed, or is currently completing, the promised improvements at D300 high schools and middle schools.
