Response to Intervention / PBIS

Jacquie Duginske, RtI/ PBIS Coordinator, Elementary
Dr. Joan McGarry, RtI/PBIS Coordinator, MS/HS
Cheryl Frederickson, Behavioral Interventionist

What is RtI?

Response to Instruction (RtI) is "the practice of providing

1) high-quality instruction/intervention matched to student needs
2) using learning rate over time and level of performance to
3) make important educational decisions" (Batsche, et al., 2005).

This means using appropriate assessments to evaluate student growth, providing all learners with research-based interventions, continuously measuring student performance using scientific progress monitoring instruments for all learners and making edu-cational decisions based on a student's response to interventions.

This three-tiered Model of School Supports covers both the Academic and Behavioral systems associated with student success. While RtI covers academic growth, Positive Behavioral Interventons and Supports (PBIS) represents the behavioral growth. Together, these systems look at the whole child to insure each has the supports needed to be successful learners.

WHAT CAN PARENTS DO TO HELP CHILDREN LEARN?

Read To Me

by Jane Yolen

Read to me riddles and read to me rhymes,
Read to me stories of magical times.
Read to me tales about castles and kings.
Read to me stories of fabulous things.
Read to me pirates and read to me knights,
Read to me dragons and dragon-book fights.
Read to me spaceships and cowboys and then,
When you are finished--please read them again.
