Board Member Biographies

Anne B. Miller

Algonquin Township
Current term expires: April 2021

  • First elected to the Board of Education in 1997
  • Serves as Board President

Anne has proudly served on District 300’s Board of Education since 1997, making her the most experienced member of the current board. She has served on several Board committees during her tenure on the Board including, Education, Policy and Discipline Committees.

She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree and Juris Doctorate degree from DePaul University. She also completed a 40-hour post-graduate mediation program at DePaul. She was admitted to the Illinois Bar in 1999.

Her District 300 volunteer positions have included: chair of the Re-Zoning Committee, member of Consortium for Educational Change, improvement teams for Eastview Elementary School (16 continuous years) and Algonquin Middle School, and PTO co-president.  She served as Board Secretary for several years, and has been Board President since 2011. Her commitment to the Board is due in part to her being a District 300 resident for over 40 years, where she has seen her three children all graduate from District 300 schools.  Anne is a member of both the Illinois Association of School Boards and National Association of School Boards.

Anne is an accomplished attorney, and currently is a partner in the Lake in the Hills law firm of Fishman Miller PC, which provides legal expertise in mediation, estate planning, corporate, and elder care matters.  She is a recognized legal expert, with extensive experience in all aspects of fiduciary services, including complex claims reconciliation and preference and fraudulent conveyance analysis, with specific expertise in resolving tax and medical provider claims.  Her professional credentials are many and include her being admitted to practice law in Illinois, Northern District of Illinois, Southern District of Indiana and Western District of Missouri as well as being a current member of the Illinois State Bar Association and the American Bankruptcy Institute.  Anne also is currently a coordinator for the McHenry County Peer Jury Program. Her passion for elder care has led her to also serve on the Board of Directors of JourneyCare Hospice, a not-for-profit agency.

Anne's community involvement beyond the school district is extensive and includes: committee chair for Cub Scout Pack 151; committee chair for Boy Scout Troop 151; chair for Cub Scout activities for the Kishwaukee District; religious education teacher St. Margaret Mary (Recipient of Bishop O'Neil Catechist of the Year Award); T-Ball and soccer coach; and co-chair of the children's committee for Angel Towne.

Steve Fiorentino

 
Algonquin Township
Current Term Expires:  April 2019

  • Served as Chair of the Community Engagement Committee
Steve is founder and owner of Fiorentino Consulting, LLC, which helps companies with business plan development, strategic planning, key client acquisition and hiring and retention of top employees.  He is also working in their family financial planning business.  He received a Bachelor of Science degree in pharmacy from the University of South Carolina and has completed numerous executive management courses.  Prior to launching his consulting practice, Steve held several management positions in the pharmaceutical industry over the course of 20 years.  His most recent experience was building a sales and medical team of 100 people for a start-up bio-tech company and managing an operating budget of over 300 million dollars. He has effectively recruited, hired, trained and retained over 200 high performing employees in the pharmaceutical and healthcare sector.
 
Steve is very active in his church community: Light of Christ in Algonquin.  He is a youth religious education teacher, care minister, past leader of community outreach and leads the church expansion team in preparing to worship at an additional site.  He has coached children of all ages in basketball and softball and has been active with AAYO, Dundee Park District, and LITH YAA. Steve moved to Algonquin in 1996 with his wife, Robin, and has a daughter in a D300 school.

Joe Stevens
 
Rutland Township
 Current term expires: April 2019
 

Joe lives in Rutland Township and is a retired executive from Sherman Health, having spent most of his life in the healthcare arena.  He holds an MBA from Lake Forest Graduate School of Management.  Currently Joe is President of Nine Rivers Enterprises and does leadership training for consulting companies and also does both management consulting and leadership training for medical groups.  He is a past chair of the Greater Elgin Family Care Center and has served in a variety of volunteer capacities.

Suzie Kopacz

Hampshire Township

Current term expires: April 2019

Susie and her husband, Gary, reside in Hampshire, where they raised three daughters, all of whom are District 300 graduates.  From 2003-2007, as an elected member of the D300 School Board, Susie chaired the Board Education Committee and co-chaired the Board Construction & Facility Committee. Prior to being elected to the School Board, she was a member of the School Improvement Teams at Hampshire elementary, middle and high schools.  She served on the 4-block district-wide study committee and also on the Re-Zoning District Committee.

Susie is a former school teacher.  She taught grades 6-8 (middle school social studies) and elementary grades 3 and 4.  She also taught for several years as a substitute teacher.  She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in History from Illinois State University.  She completed her elementary certification at Elmhurst College.  She has three decades of small business experience as an independent contractor with Mary Kay Cosmetics.  Currently she holds the position of Future Executive Sales Director with Mary Kay Cosmetics.

Dr. David Scarpino
 
 
Current term expires: April 2021

Dr. Scarpino started his employment with District 300 in July 2004 as the Associate Superintendent. Dr. Scarpino’s responsibilities included but were not limited to overseeing the day-to-day operations of the school district including 26 schools, 20,000 students, and 3,000 employees. After serving in this capacity for 6 years Dr. Scarpino then became principal of Hampshire Elementary School in 2010. He served in this capacity for 5 years then retired in July 2015

In addition to an in-depth knowledge of the field of education, Dr. Scarpino has a unique understanding of District 300. He has worked in 3 states (Illinois, Texas and Wisconsin) and has a total of 40 years of public school service as a: classroom teacher, assistant principal, principal, associate superintendent, superintendent of schools and principal mentor. Dr. Scarpino has extensive experience with: preparing and implementing budgets, contract negotiations, referenda, employee discipline, parent concerns, student issues, curriculum evaluations and incorporating charter schools into a public school district, and all other areas of public education.

Dr. Scarpino holds a Doctorate degree from Nova Southeastern University, a Master’s Degree from National Louis University, a Certificate of Advanced Study from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and a Bachelor’s Degree from Western Illinois University.

Mary McNicholas



Current term expires: April 2021

A lifelong Dundee resident, Mary attended Dundee Highlands Elementary, Dundee Middle, and Dundee-Crown High Schools. During her time at DCHS, she served as the Student Representative on the D300 School Board's Legislative Committee, advocating for policy to support public education and D300.

She is currently studying Public Policy with a specialization in Education Policy at the University of Chicago. She has worked in neighborhoods on the Southside of Chicago with the Urban Education Institute to help low-income students of color access and afford a college education. She will continue to attend school this year while working with the Urban Education Institute’s “To & Through” project, helping public schools understand how best to serve low-income students.
