Spring 2012

In 2008 Hampshire Middle/High School became just Hampshire Middle School. The Hampshire Middle School building carries alot of history, for instance, the planning for Hampshire High School located at 560 South State Street, Hampshire Illinois began in 1950. Opening day was ½ day on Friday, September 5, 1952. The original building was 32,098 Sq. Ft. and opened with 105 High School Students, 46 boys and 59 girls along with 58 Middle School Students, 32 boys and 26 girls. The gymnasium was not finished until January of 1953, which at this time an open house was held with more than 1,000 people in attendance. Book rental was $4.00 for 7th and 8th grade and $4.50 for grades 9 through 12. There was a .50 cent discount for those who paid during the first week.

The Name of Hampshire "Whip-Purs" came from the colors white and purple in the late 1940's. The mascot was a purple and white tiger/cat holding a whip which was chosen at a later date.
