Hampshire Elementary School
Principal Dr. David Scarpino
Spring 2013

Building on the strong school/community bond that began when the first log schoolhouse was constructed in Hampshire in the 1830's, Hampshire Elementary School (HES) has been an integral part of the Hampshire community since the first students entered its doors on January 5, 1959. While maintaining our primary focus on excellence in teaching and student learning, our school's administration, faculty, and staff have always valued the importance of school, family and community working in partnership to provide the best opportunities for children to learn and grow.

Just as Hampshire Elementary is an integral part of the Village of Hampshire, the town of Hampshire is an integral part of our school and what we can offer our students and their families. Among the traditions that unite our school with our community are: family events that become community events such as our Fun Fair, Open House, Family Reading Night, and Family Bingo Night, our annual Halloween parade through town with the streets and downtown lined with well wishers who applaud our students (and faculty!) in their creative costumes, the Lions Club annual hot dog roast and entertainment provided at HES at Halloween time, Hampshire Elementary annual contributions to the local food pantry, the Sweetheart Dance where our young ladies come regally dressed and accompanied by their very proud dad, grandpa, or uncle, annual visits to the Hampshire Fire Department not only for fire safety education, but also for the students to get to know our local firefighters and EMT's and of course our strong tradition of excellent music performances where families and community pack our multi-purpose room to see and hear the talented HES students. Cub Scouts, their Pinewood Derby in the Spring at HES is a sight that would put a smile on the face of every NASCAR fan! Girl Scouts, Park District, Village meetings - all have a home at HES when in need of a meeting place.

As you review the following historical information about Hampshire Elementary School, you are encouraged to keep in mind our mission that maintains our focus on the importance of educating the whole child: Hampshire Elementary School values and nurtures each child through a process of education which encourages life-long learning for fulfilled and responsible living. Educating the children of Hampshire is a tremendous responsibility, one which we accept with honor and great enthusiasm!
