Meadowdale Elementary
Principal Jack Melfi

Meadowdale Elementary School can be found tucked among the houses of a quiet neighborhood. Almost 500 students attend kindergarten through fourth grade at Meadowdale. Many of Meadowdale's students are second language learners.

Students at Meadowdale spend much of their day on literacy. Teachers incorporate a structure in their classrooms where children read independently, read to each other, listen to reading, work with a teacher and do phonics work. Students participate in all these activities each day. Most children choose in what order they will complete the activities. When one enters a classroom during the literacy block, one sees students actively engaged in reading.

Meadowdale parents are supportive of their students and the school. The PTO raises money each year which goes towards books for the students. The PTO also plans family activities. These events are always well attended. Parents volunteer in classrooms and on district committees.

The school staff is diverse. It includes teachers from the immediate area as well as teachers from Spain, Chile and Puerto Rico. Teachers participate throughout the year in professional development activities to develop new skills. These skills are immediately put into place in the classrooms to support the students.
