The Dorothy deLacey Early Childhood Education Center was originally designed to provide a variety of services for the well-being of the young child and their families. Though the name has changed as well as the location, the deLacey Family Education Center continues this mission of meeting the diverse needs of our students by engaging the entire family in the educational process. Over the years the facility has partnered with community programs such as Women, Infants and Children (WIC), Elgin Community College, Head Start, the Northern Illinois Special Education Recreation Association (NISRA), Aunt Martha's, Miles of Smiles, Kid Care and the Children's Home & Aid Society of IL (Tom Thumb) among many others. Immunization clinics, child dental services, parental support groups and family activity nights fill the deLacey calendar.

Of course, the main focus of the center's early childhood program is education. deLacey provides high standards and challenging learning opportunities to increase potential for long term educational success. The Illinois Early Learning Standards guide the curriculum and the staff strives to implement a child-centered philosophy which values the individual strengths of all children. Programs for 3 to 5 year olds are taught by teachers who have their Bachelors or Masters degrees in Early Childhood Education or Special Education. The staff employs speech/language therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy and social services as part of the educational experience. Pre-school classes meet Monday through Friday for 2 ½ hour sessions in the morning and afternoon. For those who would benefit Spanish language support is also available.

Students attending deLacey come from throughout District 300. Children are screened to determine eligibility upon their third birthday or later. Programs seek to honor the cultural and linguistic diversity found in our local communities. In 1991 deLacey Early Childhood Education Center targeted four areas to address child wellness - education, health, family involvement and social services. Time has only strengthened the importance of each of these areas in deLacey Family Education Center's current offerings.
