A Tremendous Loss

Superintendent Dr. Michael Bregy sent the following message to all D300 faculty and staff the evening of Sept. 30, 2013:

I cannot begin to tell you how saddened I am to share news of the passing of a D300 family member.  Sleepy Hollow Elementary School Literary Teacher Laura Crawford was just 46 years old when she passed away today (September 30, 2013) from complications related to chronic lymphocytic leukemia.  Her illness had devastated her Sleepy Hollow colleagues, who made this short video wishing her well two weeks ago.

Previously, Laura was a Media Center Director at Dundee Highlands Elementary School and has been at Sleepy Hollow for the past 20 years teaching 2nd and 3rd grades and literacy.

Laura’s legacy will stay alive within the walls of Sleepy Hollow Elementary School as much as it will persevere in public libraries and children’s homes throughout our community and the world.  The D300 School Board honored her publishing success at the September 28, 2009, Board meeting.  She was the well respected author of numerous children’s books, including alphabet books entitled, “The American Revolution from A to Z,” “The Pilgrims’ Thanksgiving from A to Z,”  and lastly “Benjamin Franklin from A to Z” which published this year.  Laura’s other books included, “In Arctic Waters” as well as a postcard-themed series, “Postcards from Chicago,” “Postcards from Washington,” and “Postcards from New York City.”   A selection of her books is now on display in the D300 Administration Building lobby in her honor, and the Board and I will ask everyone to join us in a moment of silence at the next Board meeting (7:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 15, 2013, at Westfield Community School).

Laura's sisters posted on her CaringBridge site the following information:

Laurie's wake will be on Wednesday, October 2, from 4 pm. to 8 p.m. at Malone Funeral Home, 324 East State Street, in Geneva.  The funeral prayers will be Thursday, October 3, at Malone Funeral Home at 9:30am.  We will then proceed to St. Peter's Catholic Church, 1891 Kaneville Road, Geneva for the Funeral Mass.

We ask that any donations be made in her name to LivingWell Cancer Center in Geneva.  Laurie volunteered there and it was a wonderful source of comfort to her for the last five years.

We also want to request that if you are interested, please send us a note in the next week or two about what Laura meant to your life and how special she was to you.  We'd like to compile a book for her nieces and nephew.  They didn't get to have her long enough and we'd like them to really understand how wonderful their Aunt Laura was now and when they are older.  You can send them to 2156 Bartram Road, North Aurora 60542 or linda.crawford@comcast.net.  Thank you.

The district crisis team is available to support any staff members or students in need.  Please contact either Mrs. Shelley Nacke or Mrs. Katrina Shedor in Education Services at 847.551.8331 if you should need any assistance from the crisis team.

Sincerely,

Michael
