District 300 Raises over $33,000 for Hurricane Relief Efforts

In an effort to support hurricane relief victims, District 300 students, staff, and community members have raised a total of $33,568 through school-based fundraisers.

District 300 will disperse the funds accordingly to the following hurricane relief funds:

  • American Red Cross: $27,693.21
  • J.J. Watt’s Houston Flood Relief Fund: $2,753.00
  • Houston Food Bank: $1,287.21
  • Houston ISD Education Foundation: $235.00
  • Houston Animal Shelter: $1,598.56

Each District 300 school hosted their own fundraisers during a two-week period in late September. Dundee-Crown High School, for example, hosted a talent show that raised $1,200, Lake in the Hills Elementary hosted a Walk-a-Thon, and Hampshire Elementary students set and reached a specific fundraising goal and, as a result, had an opportunity to toss pies in the faces of teachers, Principal Nancy Regul, and Superintendent Fred Heid.

District 300 middle schools participated in a "coin competition" to support the relief efforts. Each middle school had a table with jars to collect donations. Each jar represented one of the district’s middle schools. Each penny donated counted as one point for their respective school. Each silver coin donation equated to a reduction in points (for example, a nickel equated to negative five points) that would be placed in another school’s jar. Dollar bills counted as positive points, with a $1.00 bill totaling 100 points. The total amount raised through the “coin competition” totaled more than $3,000.

District 300 collected a total of 304,275 coins through our hurricane relief efforts, including the “coin competition.”

District 300 would like to thank Algonquin Bank and Trust and their president, Dave Ward, for waiving the fees associated with counting coins. Algonquin Bank and Trust’s generosity saved the District over $4,000 in fees.

District 300 would also like to send our deepest thanks to our students and our community for your outpouring of generosity to support this cause.
