411 Review from September 9

Four Items from One School Board Meeting in One Minute

1. The Board welcomed students from Meadowdale Elementary to lead the Pledge of Allegiance.  Introduced by Principal Jack Melfi, the girls represented the Girls on the Run Club, while the boys represented the Boys & Girls Clubs that recently expanded to Meadowdale: Emily Alvarado, Yazil Cortez, Ruby Peralta, Layla Morales, Edith Garcia, Alia Medrano, Jared Moreno, Julian Oliveros, Eric Vivanco, and Martin Vivanco.  Click here to see photos and a news story about the recent Boys & Girls Club celebration at Meadowdale.

2. I sought feedback from the Board regarding future updates at Board meetings about the progress of the 5-year D300 Strategic Plan.  The district plan is summarized here.  I also shared with the Board that D300 faculty were invited to participate in the ongoing process of developing and implementing measurable tactics to support the Strategic Plan and that work is moving forward collaboratively.

3. Chief Financial Officer Susan Harkin presented an updated tentative budget for 2013-2014, showing a projected balanced budget this year.   Board members will vote on adopting the annual budget at the Sept. 23 meeting.

4. Leaders from the School Board Legislative Committee, Kathleen Burley and Steve Fiorentino, asked the Board for feedback on what the district’s legislative priorities should be for this school year.   The Board informally voiced support for these five priorities, pending a Board vote on Sept. 23:  (1) the state formula for school funding, (2) pension reform, (3) capital funding, (4) virtual charter school legislation, and (5) building legislative alliances with other school districts.
