411 Review from September 23

Four Items from One School Board Meeting in One Minute!

1.  The Pledge of Allegiance was led by students of high integrity from Liberty Elementary School. Most of the Board meeting was spent celebrating outstanding student achievement, starting with state-qualifying athletes from the Jacobs High School Special Olympics Track Team.  The Board then honored ACT Stars, who are students who earned a 30 or higher composite score on the ACT exam. (Nationally, only 5% of all test takers achieve this high score, and in D300 there were 82 students who did so this year!)  Next, the Board recognized 140 AP Scholars, who are students who excelled on their Advanced Placement exams.  And finally, Jacobs High School used its annual Secondary Showcase opportunity to highlight the school’s outstanding orchestra program.  Click here to see a list of all students who were honored by the Board on Sept. 23.

2.  The Board concluded a months-long public review process by voting to approve the budget for 2013-2014, which was a balanced budget.

3.  The district shared plans to expand high school course options in 2014-2015 by offering Robotics II at Dundee-Crown High School and Robotics I at Hampshire High School, as well as a Video Production II course at DCHS and Video Production I at Jacobs High School.  A new Earth & Space Science Class will be offered at all high schools, and the district will partner with a local cosmetology school for certification opportunities.  Also, later this fall the district will invite interested high school teachers to be part of the exciting expansion of iPads in D300 classrooms.

4.  The Board approved the district’s legislative priorities for 2013-2014, which are: school funding, pension reform, capital funding, virtual charter school legislation, and developing alliances with other school districts.  The Board continues to ask for the active support of all D300 families and staff members to ensure our students have the resources they need and deserve.
