411 Review: Oct. 28 Board Meeting

Four items from one School Board meeting in one minute!

1.  The Board celebrated the recent D300 Multicultural Festival, enjoying video highlights of the school displays, student performances, and community exhibitions. The festival video is on YouTube. Two of the festival chairs, parents Paul Dodson and Nancy Zettler, also reflected on this incredibly successful event. You can watch this conversation on the BoardDocs webpage.  Choose the October 28 Board meeting, click Watch Video, and select agenda item #5.5.

2.   The Board learned about the implementation of the Common Core Standards math curriculum in kindergarten through 8th grades.  They heard how the new standards have affected how students learn and practice math, how teachers and administrators are being supported in shifting to the Common Core Standards, and how the D300 math program allows students to reach advanced level Calculus classes by their senior year of high school.  This presentation is agenda item #5.2 on the BoardDocs video.

3.   Jacobs High School students and staff who have restored and put to good use the school greenhouse shared their success story with the Board.  The school partnered this year with the Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Interfaith Food Pantry to develop fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs for local families in need.  This presentation is agenda item #5.3 on BoardDocs.

4.  Outstanding students from Carpentersville Middle School, Lakewood School, and Westfield Community School joined with building and district staff in sharing details of their Safe School Ambassadors program, which was piloted this year at three schools to reduce mistreatment of peers.  The students raved about the positive impact the program has had on improving school climate and changing lives.  To hear their mature insights, watch agenda item #5.4 on BoardDocs.
