Common Core Standards Overview

The new Common Core State Standards:

  • Are “fewer, clearer and higher” academic standards
  • Are aligned with college and work expectations;
  • Are clear, understandable, and consistent;
  • Include rigorous content and application of knowledge through higher-order skills;
  • Build on strengths and lessons of current state standards;
  • Are informed by other top-performing countries, so that all students are prepared to succeed in a global economy and society; and
  • Are evidence-based.


Key Features of the New Common Core Standards:

  • The new standards were developed through a national consortium of experts from the workplace and from universities with the goal of all students graduating high school possess the core academic knowledge and skills necessary for success in college, career and life.
  • They are designed to provide the skills students need to be globally competitive.
  • Illinois joined the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers to develop assessments of the new standards. The new assessments will begin in the 2014-2015 school year.
