D300 Offers AP Capstone For 2018-2019 Sophomores and Juniors

Beginning in 2018-2019, District 300 will offer an AP Capstone course to sophomore and junior students. AP Capstone replaces a student’s core English class and is an ideal option for students considering Honors or AP English courses.

AP Capstone is a College Board program that equips students with the independent research, collaborative teamwork, and communication skills that are increasingly valued by colleges.

AP Capstone cultivates curious, independent, and collaborative scholars and prepares them to make logical, evidence-based decisions.

AP Capstone comprises two AP courses — AP Seminar and AP Research — and is designed to complement and enhance the discipline-specific study in other AP courses.

AP Capstone culminates in a “Ted Talk” style presentation and paper that is scored by the AP Board.

Students who earn scores of 3 or higher in AP Seminar and AP Research and on four additional AP Exams of their choosing will receive the AP Capstone Diploma. This signifies their outstanding academic achievement and attainment of college-level academic and research skills.

According to the College Board website, AP Capstone offers students numerous benefits, including:

  • Fostering the research, argumentation, and communication skills that are at the core of college readiness and essential for lifelong learning
  • Providing a setting to build on the knowledge and rigorous course work of AP in an interdisciplinary format
  • Offering students a unique opportunity to distinguish themselves to colleges and universities

Students interested in AP Capstone, should speak to their counselor.
