Service Learning at Oak Ridge School - Giving Back to The community
Oak Ridge offers Service Learning opportunities for its students throughout the school year. Service leaning is a three step process which includes an academic piece where the students research and learn about the organization or cause that they are helping, the actual doing of the service and afterwards a written reflection piece. In the fall the students typically help a local agency in need. Students have donated materials and created coloring packets and letters for pediatric patients at Children's Memorial Hospital. Each December, the classrooms take turns outside a local business ringing the bell for the Salvation Army. Last year we collected over $500. Each spring, students host a mini Relay for Life for the American Cancer Society. Students raise an average of $30 each and walk 2 hours to support this cause.
