A Message from Superintendent Heid Welcoming You to the 2015-2016 School Year
Dear Students, Parents, and Guardians,
It is my pleasure to welcome you to District 300 for what promises to be a fruitful and formative school year.
Beginning this August, District 300 will launch free full-day kindergarten to all students in our community. A district-wide full-day kindergarten program promises to bear tremendous results for some of our youngest students and their families. Full-day kindergarten students will receive robust literacy and numeracy instruction that will provide a solid educational foundation to develop as they progress through our system. Research has demonstrated that full-day kindergarteners exhibit stronger independent learning, classroom involvement, reflectiveness, and productivity in work with peers than half-day kindergarteners. Additionally, parents of children in full-day kindergarten report higher levels of satisfaction with their children’s schedule, curriculum, and the program’s support for working families. Full-day kindergarten for all students is a monumental step for our District and our community. I invite you to learn more about the benefits of full-day kindergarten by visiting: d300.org/kindergarten.
In addition to the launch of full-day kindergarten, District 300 has enhanced the technology infrastructure at all of our middle schools, collaborated with Elgin Community College to increase our ability to provide students with transferrable college credits (at no cost), and refined classroom rigor and assessment practices to maximize student success. We continue to work to on several major projects including the District’s Strategic Plan and the launch of pathway curriculums that will serve as marquee programming at each of our high schools, including the advanced manufacturing pathway at Hampshire High School, the entrepreneurship pathway at Dundee-Crown High School, and the information technology and computer science pathway at Jacobs High School.
These decisions and initiatives have been guided by our staff’s commitment to District 300’s central mission: to ensure all students are college or career ready upon graduation. There is no greater joy for any District 300 staff member than to learn one of our students has been accepted into the college of his or her choice or offered a job in the career field he or she desires. We are confident the programs we put in place for the new school year will continue providing our students with the support they need to achieve our District’s mission.
I look forward to a year full of student learning, achievement, and success.
